Over the last few weeks that I was gone, I saw three movies that are still in theaters and will be posting those reviews over the next three days. Today’s review is George Miller’s continuation of his own franchise: Mad Max: Fury Road. I saw the movie two days ago and it was definitely something.
The first thing you have to know about Mad Max is that it is the definition of an intense action movie: zero plot or character development but insane visuals and death-defying sequences that keep the audience on the edge of their seat. The movie is specifically geared towards young men with its inclusion of insane action, lack of plot, explosions, cars, guns/spears, wild storms, and just overall craziness.
If you go into the theater expecting an Oscar-worthy movie, you are going to be disappointed (except maybe for Best Costume Design because that part was crazy); however, if you walk in knowing that you are just getting a big action movie with plenty of stereotypical action tropes than this will be a great movie. The extreme use of special effects (which I am usually not a fan of) works well in all of the action scenes and fits into the theme of the overpacked action movie.
As far as plot goes, which there is little of, Max (Tom Hardy) is a former Australian police officer who lived through two cataclysmic events, the Gas Wars and the Water Wars, which has ravaged the planet and left it looking like desert. He is captured by the War Boys and their cult leader Immortan Joe. He is able to escape when Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) makes an escape attempt. They are hunted by Immortan Joe and his army of War Boys as they make a mad dash for a mythical “Green Place” where they will be safe.
While many people see this as a reboot, it is technically a continuation of the three-movie series 30 years ago starring Mel Gibson as Max.
If you are looking for a mind-numbing action flick, Mad Max: Fury Road is the movie for you; however, don’t expect to leave with any sort of psychological quandary.
What did you think of Mad Max? Did you know it was a continuation or think it was a reboot of the original? Make sure to comment and let me know!
