2019 Natie’s: Best Visuals

2019 Natie’s: Best Visuals

Special effects can make or break a movie.  When done right, the audience feels transported to a different place or time; when done wrong, it can completely ruin the experience for somebody.  The previous winners for Best Visuals have spanned the depths of space (Interstellar-2015) to a bleak version of our own future (Blade Runner 2049-2018).  The nominees this year include giant set pieces and historical recreations.

Here are the nominees for Best Visuals:

Aquaman

Avengers: Infinity War

Black Panther

First Man

Solo

2019 Natie’s: Best Score

2019 Natie’s: Best Score

*This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War

Film composers can be just as important as a director for some movies.  There have been a number of movies where the actual score itself is just as powerful as many of the characters.  This next award goes to the movie with the Best Score.  I know that the Academy breaks it down into a number of different awards, but this one will lump it all into one—score, soundtrack, sound editing, etc.

Here are the nominees for Best Score:

Avengers: Infinity War

Bohemian Rhapsody

Christopher Robbin

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

A Star is Born

2019 Natie’s: Biggest Surprise

I always try to go into every movie with tempered expectations, but sometimes it is impossible to avoid the hype—or lack thereof—when blockbusters first hit the circuit.  The next award for Biggest Surprise goes to the movie that most exceeded a mix of my personal expectations and those from the media.

The nominees for Biggest Surprise:

Bad Times at the El Royale

Bohemian Rhapsody

Christopher Robbin

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

2019 Naties: Worst Movie

2019 Naties: Worst Movie

*This post contains spoilers for A Wrinkle in Time and Venom

Not every movie can be great.  Every year there are a number of awful movies that come out—some of them failed to meet great expectations while others were dead on arrival.  It should be noted that I am sure there are plenty of worse movies that came out this year that I did not see (as I try to avoid wasting money on something that I know is not going to be a good movie), so there are only two movies that I felt I did not walk away with anything valuable from.

Last year’s winner, Fifty Shades Darker, was one that I was unfortunately dragged to by a now ex-girlfriend.  My standards really weren’t that high for Sausage Party in 2016, yet it still managed to disappoint.  Both Age of Adaline and Papertowns from the two years prior were absolute personal snoozefests.

Here are the nominees for Worst Movie:

A Wrinkle in Time

Venom

Naties 2019: Best Scene

Naties 2019: Best Scene

*This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther

The Best Scene is far-and-away the most subjective of all of the awards.  Last year, the slick camera-work and stunt skills from the introductory car chase in Baby Driver (https://bit.ly/2ufGgP6) won me over.  The previous two years before that, a mix of nostalgia and excitement gave two different Star Wars entries back-to-back wins, and the sheer terror and incredible visuals of the Interstellar scene “those aren’t mountains; they’re waves” gave it the win in 2015 (https://bit.ly/1YC2IbD).

The nominees this year range from iconic cinematic moments to incredible speeches to beautiful film-making.  Here are you 2019 nominees for the Best Scene:

The Snappening (Avengers: Infinity War) – https://bit.ly/2WK0D3m

Billy Lee’s Intro (Bad Times at the El Royale) – https://bit.ly/2HSSaaH

“Death is better than Bondage” (Black Panther) – https://bit.ly/2WFNBns

The 2019 Natie’s

The 2019 Natie’s

Hello everybody!  It is that time of the year again.  With the Oscars right around the corner, it is time to begin announcing the Natie Movie Awards.  It has been a while since I have posted on here, so I will go ahead and include a recap of the previous award winners here before I begin to post the actual 2019 awards tomorrow.

Please keep in mind that these are my favorite selections–not Oscar predictions.  I also only choose from movies that I have seen.

Here is a list of all of the previous awards I have handed out with the winners of the past four years:
