Top 5 Movie Bromances

Top 5 Movie Bromances

Everybody loves a good bromance.  While there are a ton of lists with different bromances throughout all of television, there are plenty of great movie bromances as well.  Here is a list of the best out there:

#5: Wanye and Garth (Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World 2)

waynes world

These two bros are classic early 90s rockers.  After deciding to start their own camcorder show, the two defuses are hired to do their show professionally.  As Wayne falls in love with a bass guitarist, the two need to watch out for Ben Oliver (Rob Lowe), an advertiser for the station that threatens to send off the bassist if they aren’t successful.  Mike Myers (Austin Powers, Shrek) and Dana Carvey (Spaceballs, Master of Disguise) do a great job of bringing the SNL duo to the big screen.

#4: Fezzik and Inigo (The Princess Bride)

inigo montoya

Who thought a movie called The Princess Bride could give us one of the best movie bromances?  After capturing Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) and being bested by her love Wesley, these two realize their mistake and decide to partner up with Wesley after Buttercup is taken away to marry a dim-witted prince. It is so funny watching Andre the Giant and Mandy Patinkin work together in this huge cult comedy.  The Princess Bride is a hilarious movie that everybody should try to watch at least once in their life.

#3: Woody and Buzz (Toy Story franchise)

buzz and woody

You’ve got a friend in me was the theme of the Toy Story franchise and no where was it better represented than with Woody and Buzz Lightyear.  While these two couldn’t stand each other initially (http://bit.ly/1Gp4Ad5), we watch them become best friens as they share their love for their owner Andy.  These guys are like peas in a pod that we can’t even imagine being seperated today.

#2: Han and Chewie (Star Wars original trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

han and chewie

These guys were the original big-time bromance.  An angsty pilot and his furry eight-foot tall friend are the perfect combo for the Star Wars universe.  There was no greater moment in any trailer ever (and you can watch the Top 5 trailers here (slightly outdated): http://bit.ly/1DdeAsA) than when we saw Han Solo and Chewbacca return at the end.  Here is some of the perfect chemistry between Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew:  http://bit.ly/1zf120c.  I know we are all excited for The Force Awakens when the duo returns for another bout together.

Honorable Mention

Harold and Kumar (Harold and Kumar franchise)

Murtaugh and Riggs (Lethal Weapon franchise)

Bill and Ted (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure)

#1: Frodo and Samwise (Lord of the Rings trilogy)

frodo

Deep down, every guy wishes he was as close to his best friend as Frodo and Sam.  These guys would give their life for the other and (literally) carry each other up the mountain just to see the other succeed.  After they are separated from the rest of the fellowship, the two only have each other to rely on in their quest towards Mount Doom.  Even when Gollum threatens to ruin their friendship, they are able to recreate their perfect bromance by the end of the movie.  There are a few points where the bromance seems almost like a relationship.  Here is a funny fan-made trailer the has pulled together multiple scenes where their friendship seems like a little more than a friendship: http://bit.ly/1Dtmnhe.

Who do you think makes up the perfect bromance?  Comment and let me know!

Top 5 Animated Movies

Top 5 Animated Movies

Who doesn’t love a feel-good animation to remind us of our childhood?  Disney and Pixar have combined to give us some of the best animated features to date and they are still churning them out.  While I may not be a fan of animation personally, I have a great respect for what these companies have managed to create.

*Disclaimer:  There will be no Disney princess movies on the list…other Disney movies are not exempt however*

#5:  Monster’s Inc. (2001)

monsters inc

This movie and the prequel, Monster’s University (2013), are two enjoyable movies that show people what really is hiding in their closet.  We get to see the world of monsters and how their life is not that different from our own.  Their life is thrown for a loop when a human child accidentally manages to work her way into the monster world.

#4:  Up (2009)

up

Up created a more emotional relationship in the first ten minutes of the film than Twlight did in four movies.  Grumpy widower Carl Fredricksen decides to travel to Paradise Falls in South America in honor of his wife.  Wilderness Explorer scout Russell slips on board and the two go through misadventure after misadventure.  From talking dogs to prehistoric birds, Up is not afraid to throw wacky material at us but make the movie work nonetheless.  For real though, if that montage didn’t give you the feels you’re most likely a sociopath:  http://bit.ly/1I8aWDs

#3:  The LEGO Movie (2014)

The_Lego_Movie_poster

Everything about this movie is awesome (except that awful “Everything is Awesome” performance at the Oscars).  The cast is astounding, the animation is perfect, and the fact that we got a great movie that never came off as a huge commercial is surprising.  This is also the only movie on the list that wasn’t created by Disney or Pixar.  Who knew other people knew how to create animations?  You should check out Couch Tomoato’s clip showing the comparisons between The LEGO Movie and The Matrix because it is spot on:  http://bit.ly/1DAUedj  He is new to YouTube but this guy has a big future ahead of him.

#2:  The Lion King (1994)

lion king

The Lion King put animation back on the map in 1994.  After winning two Oscars, The Academy added a new category for Best Animation primarily because The Lion King deserved more than just best sound and original song.  Without The Lion King, we would be missing a ton of the great animations that we get today.

Honorable Mention

The Emperor’s New Groove (2003)

The Bee Movie (2007)

Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

WALL-E (2008)

A Bug’s Life (1998)

#1: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 (1995-2010)

Toy_StoryToy_Story_2toy story 3

If I were to split up the Toy Story series, I would have little room on my list for anything else, so I decided to combine them into one big pick.  Toy Story is one of the easiest animations to relate to and leaves everybody feeling happy inside.  While it has been announced that there will be a Toy Story 4, it will always be a trilogy to me because there is no way that they can recapture the magic of the third one.

What are you favorite animated movies?  Should a princess movie be on the top five?  Tell me how wrong I am.

Top 50 Movies of All-Time (#50-41)

Top 50 Movies of All-Time (#50-41)

Yesterday, I listed the honorable mentions for the top 50 movies I have ever seen.  While I am sure film professors would disagree with almost everything on here (look Citizen Kane was cool and all but you won’t see it on this list), my top 50 take into account my memory of watching the movie, my expectations going into the movie, and the general success of the movie.  There will be a few older movies on here, but most of this stuff is post 1990.

#50:  Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

bill and ted

One of Keanu Reeves’ first major roles, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure has an almost Wayne’s World atmosphere as two dim-witted high schoolers have to pass a history exam or risk being sent to military school and forced to break up their band. When all hope seems lost, a time traveler from the future, played by George Carlin, arrives and tells them that their band will solve world peace and is the greatest rock band ever.  He lends them his time machine so they can go meet historical figures to help with their exam.  We follow each of their hilarious misadventures from ancient Greece to the Battle of Waterloo.

#49:  12 Angry Men (1957)

12_angry_men

As an older Orson Welles movie, not many people have seen 12 Angry Men.  Starring Henry Fonda, the movie takes place almost entirely in a jury deliberation room as Fonda defends a teenager accused of killing his father.  While the evidence initially rules against the teenager, Fonda argues passionately attempting to convince the other 11 men in the room that there is reasonable doubt.  As time goes on, more and more guys start to become annoyed and the arguing heats up.  The movie is so old, that you can watch the entire thing on YouTube if you have the time right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzPll63y2b0

#48:  UHF (1989)

51M2NT5B5RL

The underrated movie of the week for this week, I have already gone into detail discussing why UHF is such a great movie. Starring “Weird Al” Yankovic and his fight to save his popular TV station, this cult comedy focuses more on adding humor through movie parodies and ridiculous commercials.  While the brand of humor is not for everybody, UHF is a great movie for those who appreciate Weird Al’s work.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ega5Rcct2s

#47:  Toy Story (1995)

Toy_Story

While I am not a huge fan of animation in general, Toy Story is one of the few movies who managed to break that mold. With the second movie listed as an honorable mention, Toy Story is a great movie that made every child suspicious of what happened in their room while they were away.  It is definitely a classic that will be remembered for a long time.

#46:  Facing the Giants (2006)

Facing_the_giants

Another movie that almost nobody has seen, Facing the Giants follows a high school football coach facing a lot of pressure to create a winning program.  With the community split on whether he should get a chance or be fired, money issues at home, and difficulty starting a family with his wife, he finally throws his hands up and decides to “let go and let God.” Facing the Giants is definitely a top 50 movies and I strongly encourage anybody who hasn’t seen it to take an hour and a half break to watch the independent film.  Here is one of the most intense scenes from any football movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sUKoKQlEC4

#45:  Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

Wreckitralphposter

Another animation movie to crack the top 50, Wreck-It Ralph was a great movie that came out just a few years ago.  While it was obviously written to appeal to younger children, it is also a pretty fun movie for everybody else.  As a villain tired of being the bad guy, Ralph attempts to become a hero in the vast video game universe.

#44:  22 Jump Street (2014)

22_Jump_Street_Poster

Very rarely is a sequel ever better than the original, but this is the case with 22 Jump Street.  Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star as buddy cops who have to go undercover at a local state college to find a new drug that has resulted in the death of teens.  Hilarious, witty, and self-referential, 22 Jump Street is one of the best comedies out there today.  Plus, who didn’t find themselves cracking up during that hilarious (albeit vulgar) end credit montage? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMjKaqk_3EI

#43:  Moneyball (2011)

Moneyball_Poster

Who ever thought that a book about baseball statistics could be turning into a Best Picture-nominated film?  I tip my cap to the creators of Moneyball.  Focused on the true story of Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s, Moneyball stars Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Chris Pratt as we get an inner look at how the A’s used sabermetrics to revolutionize scouting in baseball.

#42:  Anchorman (2004)

anchorman

Another comedy in the top 50, Anchorman was a film that nobody really saw coming that has turned into a cultural mainstay.  I can’t even begin to think of how many references I’ve heard to the movie in conversation.  Headed by Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd, Anchorman is a must-see for everybody out there.  And you cannot forget the best movie fight scene out there:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipsPgNEmAXI

#41:  World War Z (2013)

world war z

I entered the theater with literally no expectations for this movie.  By the time I left, I was actually pretty impressed with what I saw.  Unlike other zombie movies that tend to focus on the horror aspect, World War Z was an action movie with zombies in the background.  As a former underrated movie of the week, more people should take a two hour break and go on Netflix to check out the zombie flick.
